You can see I like to take photos with my cell phone camera. And even though they aren’t good, they are intriguing and can be used in a pinch with stories you write for publications or Web sites. This is a shot of my 79-year-old dad pushing his head through a frame filled with thin plastic tubes in a children’s exhibit at the Museum of Nature and Science in Denver. The photo is eerie and reminds me of a death mask. Yet what it really depicts is an aging man who still has so much curiosity about the world. That day, he said he couldn’t bear the thought of dying because of all the things – scientific advancements, discoveries – he would miss. Little did I know he would have a near death experience during a massive spinal fusion surgery a few months after this shot was taken. He’s slowly recovering now.
Do you think it reminds you of a death mask because of his age? I wonder if you would have had the same thought if it was a younger person.
Hey thanks for making a comment on the blog, Cheryl. And yes, you are undoubtedly correct about how I interpret the photo. If a kid stuck his head in there, I would probably have a different reaction.
